GREECE. ACQUAINTANCE WITH ATHENS
Athens, of course, is very different.
Possessing such a treasure as the Acropolis with the Parthenon, they lose Crete in soulfulness and spirituality.
Having settled in a modest little hotel near the center, we observed a completely different local “flavor”. Sleeping on the wide window-sills of the huge store-windows of the couple are either homeless or hippie; Zombie-like stylish addicts are, alas, also Athens. But it was here that Plato (by the way, from the “golden youth”) went to the disciples to Socrates, in order to later become the teacher of Aristotle himself …
The land of Athens was inhabited since ancient times, and in the 5th century BC the city was at the height of glory and power. Then there were many ups and downs: the enslavement of Rome, Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire and the subsequent revival. Often – it is in the Greek style associated with the Olympic movement.
First, Athens, having pressed Paris, became the venue for the first Olympiad in 1896. And for this we needed a stadium, which was restored by patrons of art. And not anyhow: the handsome Panathinaikos is the only stadium in the world made of white marble. By the way, this word itself is also Greek, from the measure of length “stadios”.
In 2004, Athens, now beating around Rome, hosted the summer Olympics. Huge money ($ 1.5 billion) was spent not in vain: the city was transformed, and the Games were visited by 3.5 million guests! Only Sydney was able to collect more viewers!
Since then, Athens only prettier and improved, becoming more and more attractive to tourists. The change of the guard of honor at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Syntagma Square, near the Parliament building, is very popular. I also “preserved” a little along with the colorful Evzone.
The guys are very impressive: everything from 180 cm, in elegant red caps with tassels and short pleated skirts. Well, and the “train” to the skirts are white woolen stockings (or tights?). But the main “hit” of the form, unchanged since 1867, is the Tsarukha’s shoes: similar to clown ones, with flirty bombones. Huge and heavy (each 3 kg!), They are the main spectacular component of the unusual Evzons parade pitch.
And Athens is one of the few cities where I visited museums. And although from 200 it turned out to be only 2, it is already good! The National Archaeological Museum is the largest and most famous museum in Greece, having collections of world-class ceramics and sculptures. We wandered there ourselves, and for a long time I could not move away from this little unknown horseman.
The Benaki Museum, private, rich and expensive, we looked through the tour guide: on this day it was free to open until one o’clock (!), And about the 23rd we ran there through the night Athens. I forgot to take the camera, but nothing distracted from the exhibits that reminded the Armory Chamber of a magnificent variety.
In Athens, there is something to please the soul: from museums and cafes to the beaches of the Aegean Sea.
But their main attraction, the Acropolis complex, headed by the majestic Parthenon, deserves a separate story.
