GREECE. CRUISE ON ISLANDS POROS, HYDRA, EGINA
After this Greek cruise, I still “buy” on all the excursions with a similar name. I imagine the endless azure of the sea, the bright sun and the two-story liner with all imaginable amenities. Here it is, our handsome man with an orange striped:
And if the sea and the sun are trying to match, then neither Turkey nor Croatia spoiled me with the airliner. So here, Greece is unsurpassed!
The first island we reached was Poros. Actually, this is not quite an island: a narrow isthmus-shallow connects it with the mainland.
Now it is a picturesque and quiet place with virgin nature and long, though mostly rocky, beaches. The rest here was recognized as worthy of kings: at one time the summer residence of the King of Greece Otto was here.
In ancient times Poros was beautifully called Kalavriya and was considered the island of Poseidon. Probably, this title made it in the 7th century BC. center, headed the nearest city. It is now he is proud of his proximity to the capital, and in those days Athens was under his command.
Attractions on Poros are: “Lemon” forest, a convent, rock of Theseus and, of course, the remains of the temple of Poseidon. But they are scattered around the island and are accessible to those who leisurely spend their holidays here. Or, arriving for a while, uses a moped. We, like the postman Pechkin, did not even have a bicycle ☺. So just enjoyed the views of the sea and went further to the island of Hydra.
The name causes many associations, but they are all wrong. Because it is more correct to call him Idra. It is even more famous than Poros. Hydra – world celebrity! This is the favorite vacation spot of the elite, not only of Athens, but of the whole world!
The most beautiful thing here is nature, people, cozy streets with taverns at every turn and … cappuccino. They say – the best in the world!
And on this island, the only one in Greece, not only cars, but even bicycles are prohibited! Here are environmentally friendly horses and donkeys – another thing!
Here Picasso and Chagall, Audrey Hepburn and Maria Calas drew inspiration, and in 1957 Sophia Loren starred here in the film “The Boy on the Dolphin”. Among his admirers are Joan Collins, Brigitte Bardot and the master of high fashion Valentino …
Their mansions and villas are the sights of Hydra. Like 300 of its churches!
Here we had time to swim and be seduced by local silver jewelry, so Idra was remembered as a wonderful holiday of soul, body and wardrobe ☺.
And in front of us no less famous Aegina was waiting.
300 churches were built here in the Middle Ages. But not 35 of them, preserved to our time, are its main value. This is a modern temple with the miraculous relics of St. Nectarius.
The first miracle happened immediately after his death: a sweater from the body of the deceased happened to be on the paralytic bed, and he was healed. And the temple itself at the end of the 20th century was built by a rich Greek in gratitude for the miraculous recovery of his 10-year-old son with cancer.
Come here for miracles, and … leave with them. There is even a saying: “The miracle is here, on Aegina, as“ Good afternoon! ””
Nearby is a convent where nuns write icons and pour candles, providing the contents of the temple. I brought from there a small icon of St. Nektarios: for memory and protection.
And another pride of Aegina and all of Greece: the temple of the 5th century BC. with a partially preserved second floor. There is no other such in the country …
The day ended with the cruise: we were returning to Athens. And while the beauty of nature and the sights of the islands were arguing over the palm of our impressions, the liner rang with laughter and music: he danced the sirtaki!
